Outreach Summary

Georgia BEST

  • A free competition for middle and high schools

  • Competed from 2004-14

  • The original host of the competition underwent Administrative Restructuring and decided to drop the competition in 2015.

    • ONLY HIGH SCHOOL ROBOTICS TEAM TO HOST

  • In order to save the competition, we became the only high school robotics team to host a BEST Robotics Hub.

  • In 2015, we hosted 12 teams.

  • In 2016, we hosted 20 teams (67% Growth)

    • Raised $20k

  • Our goal is for these teams to use the skills that they have learned in BEST to become great teams in FLL & FRC.

FIRST LEGO League

  • Since 2004, we have been hosting FLL Regional Tournaments for DeKalb County

  • Our 2016 tournament had 24 teams.

    • 240 Students

  • Starting in 2011, we have contracted with the DeKalb County School System to provide free FLL Trainings for DeKalb Teams.

    • 71 FLL Teams (25% Growth)

      • 710 Students

    • The County pays us, but the teams pay nothing!

    • Goal is for these teams to advance to State!

  • Since 2015, we have been hosting the Atlanta Super Regional!

    • One of the largest FLL Tourneys (32 teams)!

  • Since 2015, we have also been hosting an FLL Summer Camp at FSC!

    • Need-Based Scholarships because everyone should have access to STEM!

    • 16 campers last year!

  • Last year, we created the FLL Score App for Android Phones!

    • Teams can score their practice matches.

    • The app has 165 installs on the Google Play Store!

  • 2016 FLL Teams

    • 16/32 Teams at the Atlanta Super Regional were trained by us

Science Night Out

  • Original Team Outreach Program (since 2002)

  • 4 sessions during the Spring

    • Engineering Night

      • Engineers come and kids learn about structures

    • Lego Mindstorms Night

      • Kids learn about Mindstorms and FLL

    • Alumni Night

      • The LINKS Alumni Come Back and Lead

    • LINKS Style

      • There is no set theme and kids learn about a variety of subjects

      • Chemistry, Aerodynamics, etc.

  • Up to 60 kids attend each session.

Community Outreach (25,000 individuals this year)

  • We have 2 outreach robots

    • FRC practice bot

    • C. Harriet (BEST)

  • Atlanta Maker Faire

    • 20,000 Attendees

    • We exhibited with other teams.

  • Newnan STEAM Expo

    • 1,000 Attendees

    • We set up a BEST Field and invited our teams to compete in an offseason competition.

  • School Visit

    • Kittredge Science Night

  • GSU STEM Teacher Leadership Institute

    • We taught teachers about Lego Mindstorms robots so they could start FLL Teams.

Assisting Other FRC Teams

  • Destination Einstein

    • Our workshop is adjacent to JR&D DE, so we are host to teams who come and practice on it.

    • As part of the alliance, we collaborate with our partners and share tools and ideas.
